Some students complain if the instructor only lectures and some will complain if they are expected to work in groups, contribute in class, or are required to engage in in-class activities. Should active learning be optional? What does the research say and who benefits? How can resistance to active learning and student assumptions about their learning be countered effectively from day one of class? What can you do to convince skeptical and reluctant students that their brains need to engage in order to learn? Develop strategies during the workshop to counter student resistance to active learning.
