[This is a face-to-face workshop only. Concepts apply to group learning in any type of course format. A Certificate in Group Learning is available for those who complete the optional Certificate designs.
This Canvas course site will be loaded with the materials and a narrated PowerPoint for each module just prior to each module start and will remain open indefinitely for your use. You may choose to progress through the modules independently of the workshop series as a self-paced option.
Team projects or even short break-out groups can struggle all semester and often lose focus, involve only a few of the group members, or fail to meet the higher-level learning goals due to conflict and poor use of time. This potentially highly valuable learning strategy can leave students and the instructor disappointed and frustrated.
Group learning has demonstrated gains across multiple dimensions of student learning. The essential features of effective small group learning are rarely known and implemented. Fortunately, extensive research has tested and provided us with the key strategies that will offset the all too common pitfalls of group learning.
- Design a group project or assignment that aligns with the course outcomes.
- Write specific assignment learning outcomes.
- Scaffold a group or team project across the semester that embeds equity, transparency, feedback, and individual and group accountability.
