This workshop takes place online using Zoom. Shortly after you register, you will receive an email confirmation with a Zoom link to participate. Please join the session 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the workshop to address any potential connection issues. Please have access to your syllabus (and any assignment descriptions) for practice during the workshop.
Breaking larger assignments into smaller steps can be a transformative strategy and bring greater equity to the learning process. Traditionally, many large assignments simply have a due date near the end of the semester. When larger assignments are scaffolded around specific learning outcome steps, students engage more deeply with course concepts, enhance their ability to transfer knowledge, and increase their success (Green, Bean, & Peterson, 2013). The quality of their work noticeably increases, and the final grading task is significantly reduced. Effective scaffolding will build in opportunities for clarification, feedback, and incremental progress. In this workshop, you will use your existing assignment to learn to:
- Identify the assignment’s overall outcomes and specific incremental outcomes
- Design and align the incremental steps to scaffold in your assignment
- Distribute points for each scaffolded step
- Create effective, time-saving assessment and feedback for each step
- Involve class time, peer-to-peer review, and self-assessment to advance large projects and assignments and reduce workload
