Active learning courses with combinations of in-class assignments, group work, and preparation for class significantly shift the preparation and facilitation load for instructors. Instructors fortunate enough to have Teaching Assistants can tap these knowledgeable students to make facilitation of large classes and active learning activities function more effectively. What should TAs do during group work, individual exercises, or after collect-in-class work? Re-defining the role of TAs to support active learning, coordinate learning logistics, and hold students accountable as active learners takes minimal pre-planning and can evolve into a highly productive teaching partnership.
