Your course Grading Scheme does much more than allot points or weight to each graded learning activity in your course! Your Grading Scheme can support or actually work against the kind of learning you want to happen in your course. Whether you are using significant or minimal active learning, the success of this pedagogy relies on consistent preparation for class, attendance, and engagement in class or online. Traditional grading schemes are often “high stakes” and appear most often in lecture-driven courses. A high-stakes grading scheme sends the message to cram, memorize, and focuses on the “product.”
