The Course Design Institute provides a seven step design process to help you create or significantly revise a course. In Parts I and II, evidence-based practices will inform your design of course outcomes, frameworks, assignments, assessment, in and out of class activities, grading schemes, rubrics, and syllabus. From minor tweaking to an extreme makeover, you will acquire a set of tools and strategies in each step that will increase your confidence that your students will achieve the learning you’ve intended.
Participants will receive hard copy and electronic versions of the Course Design Institute booklet with worksheets, activities, and examples of each design step. Through interactive exercises, you will be well on your your way designing your course with greater intentionality and transparency. Participants may choose to complete the Course Design Certificate.
Course Design Institute Part I Fri Feb 9 12:30-4:30 p.m. ENG B73 In Part I, you will write course and session outcomes, design and align transparent assignments, and sift course content selection through these filters. As you achieve greater intentionality and transparency, you will add course components in Part II that build off of this foundational base.
Course Design Institute Part II Mar 9 12:30-4:30 p.m. ENG B73 In Course Design Part II you will review and develop effective grading schemes, craft assignment criteria and rubrics, design and embed low stakes assessments, and align and design active learning that encourages student responsibility and accountability. Finally, you will package your course design into a course syllabus that reflects your course in all facets.
