The Course Design Institute provides a seven step design process to help you create or significantly revise a course. In Parts I and II, evidence-based practices will inform your design of course outcomes, frameworks, assignments, assessment, in and out of class activities, grading schemes, rubrics, and syllabus. From minor tweaking to an extreme makeover, you will acquire a set of tools and strategies in each step that will increase your confidence that your students will achieve the learning you’ve intended.
Participants will receive hard copy and electronic versions of the Course Design Institute booklet with worksheets, activities, and examples of each design step. Through interactive exercises, you will be well on your your way designing your course with greater intentionality and transparency. Participants may choose to complete the Course Design Certificate.
In Part I, we will unpack the first three to four core components of your course. You will determine what makes your course relevant to students, write course and session outcomes, design assignments for transparency and alignment with outcomes, and translate your outcomes into weekly in and out of class progress as students move towards these outcomes.
In Part II, you will build off of these design decisions and components, review and develop effective grading schemes, craft assignment criteria and rubrics, design and embed low stakes assessments, and align and design active learning that encourages student responsibility and accountability. All components of your course will be aligned, intentional, and transparent. Finally, you will package your course design into a course syllabus that reflects your course in all facets and provokes student curiosity.
