This synchronous workshop takes place online using Zoom accessed through this Canvas link: https://uwmil.instructure.com/enroll/H6YFRL

Please join the session 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the workshop to address any potential connection issues. Please have access to your syllabus (and any assignment descriptions) for practice during the workshop.

In this three-part Institute, you will gain the knowledge and skills to design all course components and the syllabus. You may choose to apply this knowledge to create a new course or modify aspects of an existing course. This is a seven-module course design process broken into three synchronous session parts. In each of the three parts, you will begin to apply several course design steps. You have the option to fully complete and submit each step to achieve the Course Design Institute Certificate at any time. Each of the three parts will build off of prior steps so attending all three parts is encouraged but not required. You can view missed modules at: https://uwmil.instructure.com/enroll/H6YFRL

In Part I, you will:

  • examine the course context of your students and the learning environments
  • identify the big questions behind your course,
  • describe any threshold concepts
  • translate these into a visual course framework
  • draft overarching course outcomes
  • identify major assignments or projects and their outcomes
  • align your assignments and activities with the course outcomes

Part II will focus on designing scaffolded assignments, course or module outcomes, course schedules, aligning course content, and designing rubrics.

Part III will examine designing low stakes assessment, course grading schemes, active learning, engagement, first-day strategies, lesson planning, and the syllabus.
