Overview

In this six-module series of Essential Course Design workshops, you will gain the knowledge and skills to design all course components and the syllabus. You may choose to apply this knowledge to create a new f2f, online, or blended course or modify aspects of an existing course. We will have exercises in each module for you to begin to apply each design concept to one specific course. Please bring or have access to the course that you will use as your application context during the sessions. You have the option to fully complete and submit each step to achieve the Course Design Institute Certificate at the completion of the series or at any time.

Each module will build off of prior designs in each module so attending all modules is encouraged but not required. You can view missed modules through the self-paced format at: https://uwmil.instructure.com/enroll/H6YFRL

Module 6: Now that you have designed and your aligned the essential course components, it is time to “package” them into a message – the syllabus.  This is the time to integrate all of your designs from each module into your syllabus and course schedule. Your syllabus has many parts, from welcoming students, provoking their interest, using an equity mindset, and providing key course and instructor information, to descriptions of policies, grading, and expectations for learners and learning in the course. Your syllabus not only informs, but begins the messaging that will frame student engagement and active learning expectations, build community and interaction with students, and clarify student roles and expectations. Compare examples of how to use the syllabus as a tool as well as a source of information. Merge your syllabus review on the first day with the last module’s lesson plan on engaging students at the semester start. Examples provided.
