Class Discussions can provoke intense discussion or fall flatter than a pancake. Nearly every instructor uses them with high hopes of engaging interaction and evoking multiple perspectives. What is lost when only five speak up and worse yet, the same five? Are you creating opportunities for disengagement? What do we accomplish and what could be accomplished if a “discussion” became a discussion?¬† Can 150 students actually have a conversation? Casually designed discussions often lead to casual encounters with ideas and between students. Take class discussion to new levels¬† — the levels of learning you want students to step up to and into.
