Are you looking to develop an online or blended course but cannot make it to campus for training? If so, then the fully-online, self-paced version of the Online and Blended Teaching Program (OBTP) might be for you!
What is OBTP?
OBTP focuses on helping instructors redesign their courses for the online or blended formats using pedagogically-effective methods and practices. Upon the completion of OBTP, participants will be able to:
- Use backward design for learning module creation;
- Create and gather digital content;
- Develop effective online assignments and activities;
- Assess student assignments and activities;
- Implement strategies to manage their workload;
- Support students in the learning;
- Build presence and community in their course;
- Utilize a multi-pronged approach to evaluate their course design, content, and activities; and
- Leverage D2L and other learning technologies to solve pedagogical issues that arise in the online environment when teaching online or blended courses.
OBTP will provide you with key concepts and effective practices related to these topics, and you will apply these principles directly to your future online or blended course. By the end of this program, you will have developed at least one chunk of your online or blended course and have an effective plan for managing your workload, supporting your students, building presence and community, and evaluating your course.
What does it mean that it is fully online?
While we also offer OBTP in a blended format (with three face-to-face meetings and online activities in-between), we have developed this fully-online version to meet the growing needs of the campus community. All activities are asynchronous (not in real time) and will be facilitated through our D2L course site.
What does it mean that it is self-paced?
You will read articles, watch presentations, and complete activities, all at your own pace. While we will provide checkpoints throughout the program to help you stay on track, you can work through the materials when it is convenient for you. In order to keep motivation high, however, we ask that all work be completed by scheduled due dates.
What can I expect from a fully online, self-paced OBTP?
On the day the program is scheduled to start, you will receive an email at your UWM account that will welcome you to the program and let you know that the D2L course site is ready for you to begin your work. You can expect the same outcomes as in the blended OBTP, but there will be little (if any) interaction with other participants. You will receive an email from your assigned CETL mentor every week during the program for support and once after the completion of the program to see if you have further questions regarding your course redesign.
Is fully-online and self-paced for me?
Not necessarily. This program mode has many benefits, including flexibility around assignment completion and no required face-to-face meetings. However, the self-paced format may be a challenge if you have difficulty managing time effectively or prefer to learn through peer-based activities and discussions. If this is the case, you might consider registering for OBTP in the blended format.
